ARI Pune adopts Google Apps

Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) is an autonomous, grant-in-aid research institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Established in 1946 by the Maharashtra Association, the institute is committed to promotion of science and technology with emphasis on high standards of research and development activities for the benefit of mankind and the nation. The current research activities encompass biological sciences and focus on three broad areas that are Animal Sciences, Microbial Sciences and Plant Sciences. ARI works as a main research centre under three all-India coordinated research projects of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) : wheat breeding, soybean breeding and grape breeding.

Before moving to Google Apps for Businesses, they were working with outdated technologies, such as a regular webmail provider for their email requirements. The webmail service was vulnerable to spam attacks, it didn’t integrate well with other productivity apps (like a calendaring / task or contact sharing system) and their webmail provider didn’t support offline email. Lack of offline storage would mean their email was only available to them when they were connected to the web. Google Apps has support for offline IMAP which lets you read and review your emails even when you’re not connected to the internet. It also lets you edit documents offline, and the changes will be automatically updated when you reconnect to the web.

By using Google Apps, they’ve taken another step forward to a highly integrated, secure and productive workflow. We’ve helped them deploy Google Apps in their domain, turning into an invaluable resource for ARI as a smooth, hassle-free and an easy collaboration hub. Now they can put all of their energy into doing some great research, while letting Google Apps take care of their collaboration and sharing needs.
